in the film Hitch directed by Andy Tennant, “hitch” shows that to be truely happy you cant rely on someone else

As people on this earth emotions is something we can’t avoid but something we learn to work with throughout our lives some people can inspire and make us more motivated to get our lives in order like a mentor or life coach the text “the subtle art of not giving a f**k” written by Mark Mason the movie “hitch” directed by Andy Tennant” ,  the documentary “Tony Robbins i am not your guru” directed by Tony Robbins and the song “skyscraper” by Demi Lovato are all examples of how these individuals can motivate and show you how to change yourself. As everything in life is unpredictable by having a positive mind and having trust in a mentor like figure we can overcome anything the choices we make take control of  our lives this is shown through all of these texts.

in the film Hitch directed by Andy Tennant, “hitch” shows that to be truly happy you can’t rely on someone else but having faith and trusting if its meant to be it will happen is one way on making your life less stressful and more enjoyable. The viewer can then see that Albert thinks the only way to be happy in this world is with love after having his first date with his dream girl and not being himself he says “I’ve waited my whole life to feel this miserable if that’s the only way i can stay connected to her then that’s the way its gotta be”. Hitch replies with  “no you don’t you can change. You can adapt you can make it so that you don’t have to feel like this ever again”. Hitch senses how much Albert wants this woman known as Allegra Cole. This is wear mentoring is shown as Alex Hitchens also known as “Hitch” decides to take Albert under his wing and starts teaching him how to become the man for his dream girl. When you have such high hopes you have to be prepared for the highs and lows you are going to experience. This is exactly what happens to Albert he has the highest highs when he’s with Allegra saying ” life is not how many breaths you take but how many moments take your breathe away” to when he’s not with her overthinking everything and wondering if he will ever be able to maintain actual happiness. Hitch plays an important role in making sure he still has faith in himself and the ability to have the courage to continuing on when he is alone with nothing but his thoughts.

A second aspect of mentoring influences that was shown in “hitch” was if you think love is the only thing worth living for you are going to become very unhappy very fast. There’s so much to life and as soon as you dedicate it to one thing and one thing only you are shutting of so much possibility. This is what Albert started to do and without the help from hitch his life could of turned to custard. hitch says “. Your not sick you’re single, you need to wake up each day and begin each day as if it was on purpose, and realise there’s more to life than watching other people live it, you will never know where you’re going until you know where you’ve been”. Whilst hitch was saying this a  close up on Alberts face was shown to watch his face change as he came to the realisation as what hitch was saying was so true and Albert was releasing he had been obsessing over one thing and it had changed his life for the worst. After the words hitch has just said sink in Albert is standing in the middle of new York the camera is panning around in circles emphasising that he feels lost and not sure what his next step should be. This sets the mood for the scene and from start to finish you see him single handedly transform his life into the best way for him possible, whilst maintaining a now happy relationship with the girl he had always dreamed of. By having a mentor like person in your life you can change into the person you have always wanted to be this is exactly what happened to Albert and with a couple of powerful words and a push in the right direction he was a new man living his dream life.

“skyscraper” by Demi Lovato shows that you can be at breaking point and still come back stronger than before. Demi expresses this throughout the whole song in relation to her younger self as she mentored herself through one of her hardest stages of her life. The line ” you can take everything i have, you can break everything i am like i’m made of glass like i’m made of paper go on and try to tear me down i will be rising from the ground “. Shows us as listeners/readers that when someone is trying to bring you down to nothing you have to be strong enough to rise above there words of hurt. This is something Demi did herself and transformed herself into a new person because of it. This song inspired many others around the world but mainly she inspired herself and mentored herself into becoming the person she wanted to be known for. Just like the movie “hitch” a mentoring figure in your life weather it be yourself or the help from someone else your life can be turned around and seeking out when you know you need help you can be changed into a strong person and start to become the person you want to be known for. The song skyscraper and the movie hitch both demonstrate this as the main character gets the mentoring they need and by the end of the song or movie they have transformed into a force to be reckoned with.

The text the subtle art of not giving a f**k written by mark mason is another story of someone teaching and helping you to turn your life around when you get into those dark spaces shown strongly throughout the whole story is that if you want to change your life you can do it at any moment, the only thing stopping you is yourself and as soon as you realise that you can do anything you. The line  “You and everyone you know are going to be dead soon. And in the short amount of time between here and there, you have a limited amount of flicks to give. Very few, in fact. And if you go around giving a flick about everything and everyone without conscious thought or choicewell, then you’re going to get f**ked.” this one line has a massive impact on the readers and really puts into perspective what we should be committing our time to. Just like the movie “hitch” by committing all our time and energy to one thing your going to get screwed. By having someone come in and mentor you into seeing the bigger picture and if something doesn’t work out all the other possibilities that could come that are bigger and better. Albert and Mark were both in a state that they could only see the small picture but as soon as a mentor like person came into their lives they shone and were an inspiration to others. As by having someone snap them back into reality and played out the situation that was holding them back the mentor for each of these men changed their lives and set them up for the rest of their lives best way possible.

The documentary film Tony Robbins i am not your guru directed by Tony Robbins is yet another inspirational film on how someone can mentor you into living your best life. Teaching that you can change your life at any moment as long as your willing to commit and have faith in your mentor. From the documentary the quote “ if i can uncover what beliefs and values control me, i can literally redesign my life” these were words from tony as for him to become the best he could be he had to break down his walls once he had made himself the best possible man he could be. He started to help and support people going through similar stuff and wanting to change their lives he mentored people out of depression, through tough break ups and people who had a rough upbringing. Because him himself had experienced all of this he was able to put a personal spin on things and when mentoring he understood what they were feeling. By tony relating on a personal level he was able to help the person be more open and understanding that things will get better. Just like the song “ skyscraper” when your at your breaking point and believe that nothing will ever get better is when you have to have the most faith in your mentor like figure weather it be yourself or the help of someone else. When you believe you have hit rock bottom the only way from there is up. This is shown in both the film tony robbins im not your guru and the song skyscraper. They restore the will to live in themselves and the person they are mentoring. By showing them how to get out of the situation they thought would kill them, able to restart their lives and live the best possible way until death do them apart.

In conclusion all these texts “the subtle art of not giving a f**k” written by Mark Mason the movie “hitch” directed by Andy Tennant” ,  the documentary “Tony Robbins i am not your guru” directed by Tony Robbins and the song “skyscraper” by Demi Lovato. One of the characters included in the movie book or song are put up against situations they think there’s no way out of. For them to see any way out a mentor like person needed to come into their life whether it be someone else or themselves they were all able to successfully change their life. Nothing ever is perfect even if you plan and plan something unexpected will always come up and for some people those little things are what tip them over the edge. In all of the texts previously talked about it was shown that as long as you have faith and belief in yourself and your mentor you will turn your whole life around and begin to shine.

  1. Shanae, I can see that your texts all connect in many ways, however, I think that your central theme needs to be clearer in your introduction. Also, this central theme needs to be revisited in each text discussion, and then you can expand on it throughout each paragraph.
    * When you make your connections, you also need to be specific to what happens in the texts to prove your connections. Watch vague generalisations 🙂
See me in class if you have any questions about these comments. Happy to talk these through with you.
